This project proposes a method for determining the potential energy of solid waste in the marketplace of the city of Fusagasugá. Considering that characterizing the market for such separation implied an intricate work in the estimated times, the quarantine method based on the standard Mexican NMX-AA-015-1985 was proposed, which allows to speed up the characterization process with sample size determination. Simultaneously, the commercial premises’ primary economic activities were identified, and the daily weighing of the residues of the market square was carried out for one week. Based on the equation for determining the sample’s size, 34 stores were selected to collect a 50 kg sample. With this method, a percentage relation of the total organic waste that could be used was obtained of 90.15%, 2.53% and 7.32%. Finally, from the organic solid waste from the market, it is established that using anaerobic digestion, 217.12 kWh will be produced daily.
